Network Security

Everything that you send or receive over the Internet can be seen at many points.  If you don’t use encryption, you should assume it is being read or even changed!

Before you submit a form or other information on a website, check that your browser shows that the communication is encrypted.  With mail, consider using PGP or other encryption software for sensitive mail.

Secure Communication

You should not assume that your firewall will keep out  all intruders.  Intrusion comes in two forms:  network intrusion detection (e.g. Snort) and system intrusion detection like Tripwire.

Intrusion Detection

One of the easiest way to let someone into your system is through a Trojan Horse — where you use a program or visit a site that appears to have something that you want.  However, besides getting what you want, you also get some malware.   Your system should have virus detection software (e.g.AVG)  and spyware removal software such as Spybot Search and Destroy.

Virus Protection and Spyware

I think of a firewall as a mote around a castle.  It keeps the bad guys out.  Properly built it will let the good guys go out.
