Voice Over IP (VoIP) |

Voice Over IP uses the Internet to send voice. With the proper service provider, you can connect an VoIP enabled phone to the regular phone system. |
In general, VoIP calls are not encrypted and thus are subject to sniffing. |
All of the usual features you have come to know with your regular phone can be done with VoIP. Plus, you can have an IVR (interactive voice response) system. |
The biggest challenge with VoIP is integration with the Plain-Old-Telephone System. However, many providers are available to connect your originating VoIP call to the regular phone system. There are adapters which can connect your VoIP directly to your telephone company. |

Integrating with POTS |

Emergency phone service is available from most VoIP providers. An alternative is to use a mixture of POTS and VoIP to ensure E911 service. |
